‘Supernatural’ Sets 2010 Return Date

As you all sadly know, this Thursday’s “Abandon All Hope” will be the last new episode of 2009.  We now know exactly how long this Hellatus will last, with season 5 continuing Thursday, January 14.  In other words, eight whole weeks of no new Supernatural.

So get ready to hibernate, and as soon as you get that new 2010 calendar, mark the date.

  6. To be truthful, at the moment I’m feeling as though I’m not going to miss it all. This season has left me so underwhelmed that if ep 10 doesn’t pull out all the stops I may not return to watching in January, because it just seems like my good memories of Supernatural are being destroyed with each episode that passes.

In my opinion, season five so far has been a complete failure, and to be truthful, I don’t think it will get much better. Sure, we’ll have a couple of good apocalypse related episodes, probably 3 between now and the end of the season, but it’s not enough. Such a shame that all it takes is one bad season to have a failed series, and a show/story is useless once it has hit a certain amount of crap.

I feel sorry for the guys involved in the team who have worked so hard over the years and have seen the show this season fall apart around them. I feel sorry for Kim Manners. All the hard work and passion he put into this show. Ruined.

Kripke has failed me, and much more importantly, he’s failed them, and he’s failed himself.

It’s going to take a mighty effort to turn this around now. They would have to ditch the crap like the body swap episode, and anything remotely similar to the last 5 episodes.

I’m so depressed about it, I’m not even passionate or angry anymore. That says everything.

  9. Eight weeks to rewatch 10 episodes? That’s okay. Plus I have a fic idea that I’m hoping to start next week, so it’ll be good to not have the show completely ruining my idea in the meantime. ;)

I’m glad I only know the gist of Ep12. That’ll be enough to keep me eager for January, but I’m quite happy to take a break from the obsession. :P

  10. Blah blah blah. Negative negative negative .. again. We get it!

Anyway. I cannot wait for it to come back. 8 Weeks seems like such a long time though. :(

  11. 8 weeks?! *starts crying*
    can’t wait until January ;)

    Comment by skysurferin — November 15, 2009 @ 2:02 am

  12. @kevin lee
like damien said to Dean at the end of “real Ghostbusters” i think you don’t get what the story is about….
if you’re looking for Apokalypse with a burning world and big action stunts, you will never find it on supernatural simply because their budget is restricted and Bruce Willis is unfortunately unavailable.
The story is about two brothers and their personal feelings and especially in the last episode as well as in “The End” “Free to be you and me” and most of the other s5 episodes we got a really good look at that…
If you can’t see that then i guess it’s best if you just stop watching it so you can stop whining about it(like you suggested) and grow up a little…
    (No insult intended)
    Peace out, me

    Comment by skysurferin — November 15, 2009 @ 2:12 am

  13. Wow eight weeks! Sounds like the season’s over and we have to wait for it to come back in two months like in the summer.
Anyways, I’ll be counting the days and enjoying the re-runs!

Lets’ hope that in those eight weeks some one I know very well in this blog, forgets about the show and never comes here again!!!

And skysurferin, “Peace out” is MY moto. You are free to use it, but remember that I was the frist AND only to write it!
    Peace out! GR19

    Comment by GR19 — November 15, 2009 @ 3:01 am

  15. I almost forgot to watch last thursday, that would sooooo not have happened 6 weeks ago.
I’m a little underwhelmed as well. Something has been missing but I can’t put my finger on it. It is not bad or anything but I’m just not as passionate about Supernatural anymore. I think somehow the hiatus is a good thing. And who knows maybe we’ll get the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers (apert from No Rest For The Wicked) Maybe the 8 week hiatus will do the show and me some good.
I’ll definately be back in 2010 cause I have’nt given up hope yet.

    Comment by Ruth — November 15, 2009 @ 3:20 am

  16. OH NO I am going to have to wait too long.
Hopefully the 8 weeks will go quick.

    Comment by Emma — November 15, 2009 @ 5:45 am

  17. It is a long wait, but I’m guessing that everyone will come back and say it didn’t seem like eight weeks because all the hustle and bustle of the holidays will make it fly by. As for me, okay 8 weeks is a long time, but between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, I’d be missing 4 episodes anyway because of travel. And without a DVR, tivo or VHS recorder, I would have to wait until rerun season to see them anyway. So I’m cool with it.

    Comment by Suz — November 15, 2009 @ 6:19 am

  18. Well, isn’t this website just full of loving people.

Skysurferin- I do know what I’m talking about. I’m a writer. I’ve watched and studied shows and films extensively. Just because you don’t agree with me doesn’t necessarily mean I’m incorrect, that’s just your ego kicking into overdrive. And please, don’t tell me to grow up, you barely know a thing about me.

Oh, and how is it that I’ve loved and understood the first four seasons of this show, but suddenly I haven’t got a clue about this season? Your argument is an illogical and incorrect one.

It’s simple, Season 5 so far, hasn’t been up to the standards set by the previous four seasons.

GR19- “Peace out” doesn’t belong to anybody. Anybody can use it, and thousands upon thousands have done for many years now. It doesn’t belong to you. Inserting it at the end of your posts is just a way of covering up your malicious comments. Because the truth is, there is nothing peaceful about you.

The more you insult me, and the more you hope for me to go away, the more determined I become to continue posting comments here so that the blind devotion, and the incoherent and unintelligible posts that you two are privy to, are evened out by someone who actually thinks about what he watches.

    Comment by Kevin Lee — November 15, 2009 @ 7:34 am

  19. I guess the DVD’s will come out again. Now, it’s Dexter time!

    Comment by Redzuan — November 15, 2009 @ 7:53 am

  20. This long hiatus is solely the decision of CW. I felt had last year, and this year I’m just mad. I will continue to watch whatever we get of Supernatural because everything about the show is stellar. I haven’t liked Season 5 that much, but I think even the worst of the episodes have been innovative and creative in their own way. IMO, if taken individually and not in the purported overall theme of the show, as stated by Kripke, they have entertained. My reaction to CW is that I am never investing time in a series shown on CW again. Supernatural is the only show I watch on TV now, but there are too many other venues for entertainment. As a viewer, I don’t have to put up with being jerked around like this.

    Comment by Sheri — November 15, 2009 @ 8:10 am

  21. Redzuan-

I’m a massive fan of Dexter, it’s the only show I enjoy as much as Supernatural, though Dexter has been superior to it this year.

    Comment by Kevin Lee — November 15, 2009 @ 8:16 am

  22. Yeah, Dexter is epic this year. Although, I’m a bit annoyed by Rita and Astor, what a brat. The writers there are gifted too, amazing story-telling.

    Comment by Redzuan — November 15, 2009 @ 8:32 am

  23. Yeah, I agree with you, both of those characters have been annoying, especially Rita. I know it’s all part of stressing Dex out, and plays the part of restraining his desires, but now that they’re married she seems to have completely changed. I actually wouldn’t be that bothered if Trinity killed her off. I feel, and I think those in charge feel this too, that the true relationships in the show that matter for Dex are the ones involving Harry and Debs.

    Comment by Kevin Lee — November 15, 2009 @ 8:41 am

  24. Everybody take a breath… We are going to survive, Christmas is coming and then New Year and before we know it, Supernatural will be back on our screens. Back to the entertainment on many levels! I for one am looking forward to it.

(Remember to stay on subject people… :D)

    Comment by Julie — November 15, 2009 @ 8:57 am

  25. Couldn’t have said it better myself. Most people don’t approve of Harry still being involved in “Dexter” but I think that when there are Harry scenes, it shows the true Dexter without the mask. That and when he’s in his ‘happy place’. Can’t wait till Trinity ends up on his table, and hopefully Quinn too.

    Comment by Redzuan — November 15, 2009 @ 9:02 am

  26. Yes, again, I agree with you. I believe Harry is a pivotal part of the series, and a pivotal part of Dexter’s mind. It just wouldn’t be the same without him.

    Comment by Kevin Lee — November 15, 2009 @ 9:07 am

  27. Hey, Redzuan and Kevin Lee, what is this? a Dexter forum?

    Comment by SophieS — November 15, 2009 @ 10:24 am

    Comment by Kevin Lee — November 15, 2009 @ 10:30 am

  29. Hey, at least it’s not February! With Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and whatever holidays ya’ll celebrate, should be a nice distraction.
For me, Krike and Co. has never failed me with this show, even when spoilers made me think they might. Still the best show on, still grips me and makes me run the gamut of emotions every week, so I’ll be back with anticipation on high, hoping against hope that they will find a way to continue for another season. And lets not forget, with hellatus comes the chance for others to discover the show in repeats when they find their other Thursday night viewing is also in repeats!

    Comment by Karen — November 15, 2009 @ 10:49 am

  30. i love the show in every aspect….hate the hellatus. but to everyone have a wonderful holiday season. *walks off to sulk about NOT being able to watch the boys…* and thanking my lucky stars at the same time this is ONLY a break.

    Comment by Tricky — November 15, 2009 @ 10:59 am

  31. Stop being so negative. Geez. Be thankful that this show is even still on. Don’t watch it if you dont like it. Plenty of people have enjoyed it. The only episode I didnt really “like” was the Curious Case of Dean Winchester. Everyone complains of all the comedy but get over it. Every season has had a ton of comedic episodes. And if it’s enjoyable who cares. They’re getting to the big bad stuff, it can’t all be in the first 10 episodes of the season. Stop complaining about it on here and get over it and get a life. The show is amazing.

And Dexter is a good show, but this isn’t a Dexter board! And Supernatural is better than it! No annoying Rita or Deb.

    Comment by Jordy — November 15, 2009 @ 12:30 pm

  32. Ok, this is just an observation, When things are serious or angst-y (like last season) people complain. And then when Kripke and Co. try to make things more comedic this season (because I believe they genuinely care about making fans happy) people complain. It’s the whole the ‘grass is greener on the other side’. Why can’t we just be happy with what we have and then be happy with what we get next?

    Comment by Lauren — November 15, 2009 @ 1:03 pm

  33. I’m sad we don’t get to see the show for 8 weeks, but hey, it builds up hype for the show too. haha. Anyways, I have a quick question for kevin lee.
Kevin Lee, i was wondering, what are your favorite, or in your opinion, best episodes in Supernatural. (the whole series) I’m just curious to hear what you say. :)

  36. Better get used to a Supernatural hiatus in our lives, as I am pretty confident that there won’t be a Season 6 seeing that they are spreading out the Apocalypse story out a bit this season. And as for Jensen, hope you have a nice break with your wife-to-be as I just read on jensenacklesfans.com that he got engaged to Daneel (confirmed by his rep). Congratulations to them both!

Not me, season 4 was a work of genius.

    Comment by Kevin Lee — November 15, 2009 @ 6:03 pm

  39. Actually, most people say season four was the best season this show had. It certainly gathered the most viewers in the show’s history. More people watched that season than this one.

    Comment by HausofGlass — November 15, 2009 @ 6:09 pm

  40. 8 weeks is too much! It’s like the summer hiatus all over again!!!
And, I bet they will have a big cliffhanger to keep us all wound up over the holidays.

    Comment by stamposaurus — November 15, 2009 @ 6:53 pm

  41. Season 4 just hit all the right notes. Serious and angsty? Sure. But the storyline felt like it was all thought out, like the writers knew from the beginning of it where they were going to take it — Season 3, for example, didn’t feel that way at all, surely because they hadn’t come up with bringing it the angels, and also because of that damn writers strike. So chances are, even if they knew they were sending Dean into Hell early on, they probably weren’t sure how or when they were going to get him out.

Also if you notice in “Malleus Maleficarum” that demon chick, Tammi I think, referred to their new leader rising in the west as “he,” when in fact it turned out to be “Lilith,” who is clearly a she. I always wondered about that and apparently, accoring to Sera Gamble in the bonus features, they hadn’t really figured out who this new demon leader was — at least that is how I remember it, been awhile since I popped Season 3 into the DVD player.

  43. First off Kevin Lee, this is not a “Dexter” fan board so stop blabbing about that show in this forum. And second, so what if most of the episodes this season are comedic. Kripke knows what he’s doing in terms of how to get our suspense rising. Besides, just be glad that there is actually a really good show that most of us enjoy watching.

    Comment by Jensenrules — November 15, 2009 @ 8:40 pm

  44. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved season four, it was brilliant. But from the comments I’ve read and the fans I’ve talked to a lot of people got tired of Dean’s angst and side of the road confessions and Sam’s addiction. They wanted things to be more light-hearted, the brothers to act like brothers do. And now that the episodes are more light-hearted and the brothers are starting to tease each other again people are like “Where is the apocolypse?!”
It may not be the best for the plot but I just think the writers are trying to give what the viewers wanted. Because they do care and maybe this just shows they care a little too much. (But we all care a little too much about the show as well :) )

    Comment by Lauren — November 15, 2009 @ 9:42 pm

  46. Excuse my language for a moment every one.

“Inserting it at the end of your posts is just a way of covering up your malicious comments. Because the truth is, there is nothing peaceful about you.”

You don’t fucking know me Kevin Lee! How dare you say I write malicious comments or say that I’m not good or smart! Who fuck do you think you ARE?!!

The one & ONLY that I have said a bad thing or two in this blog, is to YOU!! I have the right to my opinion as much as you do, and your opinions are malicious and unpeaceful to ME!! Wether you use bad words or not!! And who the hell needs to “think” to watch this show. Your suppose to understand it and get the concept of each episode, not anylize it and try to figure out a math problem. I just hate how you try to show off and make everyone see why YOU disliked it. So fucking what!! You didn’t like an episode just say it don’t explain it or change the damn channel and watch Dexter, which by the way its not better than Supernatural!! Oops!!
I don’t give a fuck if you keep comming back and keeping writing trash about the show, I too will be HERE all the time to defend it!!!!

PS. I didn’t say “peace out” was mine. If you read my post, I said He was free to use it, nad for anyone for that matter, but to know I was the one who used it first on THIS blog!!! That’ all I meant, Shows how much you know smart ass!

To everyone, specially you admin, I do apolygize for my words, for sounding inapropriate & lack of will power to control my emotions, but despite what he said, I’m a very peaceful and good guy, I go to chruch for crying out load!! But I know when someone is being a rude too. I couldn’t stay shut with Kevin Lee always getting away like the good guy just because he dosen’t use some bad words in his comments. He insults in his smart ass way, I can see that. He’s like Lucifer, everyone is trying to feel sympahtetic for him. Or maybe thats why he dosen’t like the show, cuz he dosen’t see his ultra ego appearing as much.
I may be at fault, MAY, for always starting the dispuite, but he alwasy’s replys and ends up with the last word. Not this time!!
I do mean it when I say,

    PEACE OUT!!!! GR19

“and the incoherent and unintelligible posts that you two are privy to”
i know i write not the best english because i’m from germany but “unintelligible” is a little over the top, don’t ya think….
I just think you’re wrong about the way you look at the show and with “grow up” i meant, you should try to open yourself to other opinions and ways of storytelling but i guess you’re too self-determined and prejudiced about it that you just can’t see it.
    That doesn’t mean I’m “incoherent”. I’m not a 13-year-old school-girl either. I just don’t support your “extreme” opinions….
Maybe you should try not to insult others as much as you do all the time (and yes you really do!) because then there wouldn’t be a reason for others to respond at the same level….

@Gr19. Nothing important but i want to point out: I’m a girl XD

  52. Well I do agree w/ Kevin Lee on one thing - they can keep that “body swap” episode. keep it on the shelf and may it never see the light of day. I’d rather get NO episode than another lame shark-jumper (the shark in that pool must be tired. and dizzy).

    Comment by Jola — November 16, 2009 @ 2:52 pm

  53. WOW - hopefully people will be a little more positive (or at least keep their personally negative comments to themselves) after the hellatus.
So far, Season 5 has been pretty good, and i agree that all doom & gloom is not good but I think we are ready for some episodes with some serious drama. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve laughed by butt off at the funny episodes this season :) I still think the writers are doing a stellar job, and I will still watch the show in it’s entirety - as I’m sure many others will do.
Mr. Kripke, you’re doing a fabulous job :)

  57. kevin lee, I understand your feelings (talking about your first post on this blog). I have lost my feelings of happy anticipation for each new episode and it makes me sad. Maybe Kripke will turn it around. I used to love this story so much. I want to love it again.

    Comment by bestshowfan — November 16, 2009 @ 7:41 pm

  58. I think the body-swap episode will have a significance to the Apocalypse myth-arc. Maybe then will the 2 brothers get to understand each others situation in this whole mess a bit better. At least that’s what I’m hoping for. And I think Dex is on par with Supernatural.

    Comment by Redzuan — November 16, 2009 @ 8:05 pm

  59. I saw there are suppose to be some Satanists in “Swap Meat,” so hopefully that means it will tie into the mytharc somehow and not just be another “ha-ha, funny” episode.

  61. I might be the only one to say this but:
Don’t leave, Kevin Lee! Shark-jumping Supernatural is still 10 times better then most of the stuff on T.V. right now!

For all those people who say Kevin doesn’t understand this show, I disagree. I think he loves this show so much, and is just very depressed at the turn of events.

I’m not saying that I agree with everything he’s possibly said. I, for one, LOVED “Channging Channels,” and was not a big fan of “Free to Be You and Me,” but if this website becomes a place to just say how much they loved the episode, when no episode is perfect, it wouldn’t be that nice.

Supernatural is already an underappreciated show, and I wouldn’t want any one of you to stop watching. It saddens me. : (
I hope “Abandon All Hope” blows your socks off, Kevin!

    Comment by Emilie Austen — November 17, 2009 @ 4:19 pm

  62. Well, to some of us it sure sounds like all he does is hate the show and in his comments it sounds like he is desperately trying to cheapen it for others and complain about the color of the sky if he can’t find anything else.
Of course everybody’s free to say if he or she didn’t like an episode but they don’t have to insult the show, the people behind it (especially the very talented writers) or other viewers and fans when they do.
    That’s all I’m saying…

  64. Really?! Eight whole WEEKS?? How will i pass the time, when there’s no Supernatural at Thursdays to look forward to? If this really is going to be the last episode before christmas, they should make it extraordinary, and maybe pretend that it’s christmas - like they did in the episode “A Very Supernatural Christmas”. That would’ve been great, and I would probably watch it over and over again in the christmas :D But still - 8 WEEKS :(

    Comment by Benedichte — November 18, 2009 @ 10:02 am

  65. Ok, i just have to say something. (this is going to be really long, i apologize) I would rather read a thousand well thought out and intelligent responses THAT ARE NEGATIVE, then a single squeeling, profanity laced screed on how “R0X0R” the show is. I may not always agree with Kevin Lee, as i’m still really into this show, but i always appreciate his intelligent responses to the show. I feel fan-pity for him that he’s losing the love… i went through that with the star wars prequels and with Buffy post season 5… suddenly things i’d always loved and championed didn’t feel GOOD to me any more. The stories didn’t seem to hold up, the writing seemed to go way down, and i struggled to find anything i enjoyed in them.

It happens, and it sucks when it does. So i feel kevin’s pain. what i don’t understand is why so many of you, and one of you in particular, are so upset by his writing. Does it make you question how much you love the show? Are you that easily swayed? If so, then maybe he has a point, and you should reflect on that. If not, then why do you care so much?

As for the show, on an ep by ep basis, i’m still enjoying it, but i also feel that this season is lacking in many ways that i felt previous season’s weren’t. The rabid level of ret-conning is one thing; they’ve always ret-conned so well, weaving dangling threads back into the new story almost seamlessly. Look at Mary’s ghost saying “i’m sorry” to Sammy in ep 8 of season 1 and then look at “in the beginning” from last year. Did they know what happened, specifically, when Mary said “i’m sorry”? No! of course they didn’t, no sequential writer can plan that far ahead. but they planted a seed and then let it grow, so when they ret-conned mary into being a hunter, it WORKED. and they gave us another look at it, briefly, in season three, which just strengthened the reveal in season 4.

Compare that to dean’s amulet being a GOD FINDER, and the Trickster being Gabriel, and the colt being with a demon named Crowley. Those are all season 5 ret-cons that COME FROM NOWHERE! They didn’t used to do that. If we’d had some hint of dean’s necklace in season 4 having angel oriented powers, or a hint that the trickster wasn’t what he seemed, or have HEARD of Crowley before, it wouldn’t be so jarring.

So, right there, is where the writing has fallen down, and it irks me. It may not irk YOU, and that’s cool, but for me, its a big red flag that the writing room wasn’t as ready for this season as we’d maybe have liked them to be.

On the other hand, i LOVE the meta they’ve introduced and i thought this last ep was awesome, and i adore becky. I thought the questions on the game show from Changing Channels were a good sign that all is not right with the brother’s, that they’re trying hard to make it so but aren’t quite there yet. THAT’s good story telling, in my opinion.

So please, all of you, think about what someone writes and either take the point or discard it; its the adult way to handle a situation. Going off on someone with profanity and spewed vitriol and then saying “but i go to church” to somehow justify your actions is really grade-school level behavior.

  66. Very nice post, Daniel. I agree with you (although I’m not a meta or Becky fan).

  67. yeah daniel it is getting kind of crazy, it will be really sad if the moderators have to close down the boards bc some people cant slow their roll.

“If we’d had some hint of dean’s necklace in season 4 having angel oriented powers, or a hint that the trickster wasn’t what he seemed, or have HEARD of Crowley before, it wouldn’t be so jarring.”
    1. i got the feeling after the christmas episode where sam gives dean the amulet that it would end up being important to the story line. not a god finder of course but i figured as did many other fans that it might hold some kind of power.
2.the fact that the trickster survived being impaled with the wooden stakes suggested maybe he was something more powerful than a trickster– if the lore was right that should have offed him. but he survived it twice.
however all these are pretty subtle so i can see where you’re coming from.
    3. we really didnt hear anything about allistair until he showed up either. so it would not be the first time.

what i do like is the sam/lucifer aka rebellious child dean/michael aka loyal to the death son, and john/god aka absent father analogies, i think it fits perfectly with the story arc and is a good explanation of why the brothers were chosen as vessels. i kind of want dean to say yes to michael because i think jensen could do a stellar performance as michael. jared has done an excellent job in his portrayal of lucifer in my opinion.

“I thought the questions on the game show from Changing Channels were a good sign that all is not right with the brother’s, that they’re trying hard to make it so but aren’t quite there yet. ” YAHTZEE.

That’s actually something that I really dislike, because if Sam and Dean are chosen upon that reason alone, it really is silly, because almost half of the world would probably fit the bill.

It’s just a quick fix solution to the WHY.

The truth is that Lucifer wants Sam because he was chosen long ago, simple as, but they now want to avoid that plot-line because they don’t want people asking where Sam’s powers are. Dean was chosen to be Michael purely on creative terms, because they know Sam was to be lined up as Lucifer.

Anything else is smoke and mirrors.

  69. Thanks bestshowfan, feedback is always awesome.

Lora, i feel that those really weren’t very good foreshadowing instances. We knew, from what Sam said, that Dean’s necklace was special. The line was something like “Uncle Bobby says its REAL special”. Yet, when the reveal finally came that it was a god finder, Bobby had no idea what Castiel was talking about. So either he lied to young Sam when he said it was “real special” or he knew it had some properties that were mystical, but didn’t know the particulars… and that bothers me ’cause i really doubt Bobby, of all people, would give a mystical amulet with unknown powers to a small child. Even if it was going to be for John originally, who knows what Sam could have gotten up to with it before he gave it. I wouldn’t have had a problem with it being a god finder if its mysticism came from dean’s time in hell and not some innate power of the amulet itself. If i remember correctly we saw Dean wearing it in hell in the last shot of season 3, so some mystic mojo about “an object that has been to hell and back can find god” would have worked just fine for me. As it is, to me it feels shoe-horned in at the last minute.

The trickster was never impaled though. They clearly showed that it was doppelganger of the trickster that was impaled the first time, much like it was a doppelganger of Bobby that was impaled the second time. The trickster can create things from thin air, including a simulacrum of himself. Admittedly the ret-con works, in that there is nothing on screen to say “this cannot be so” but since the angels weren’t conceived of until much later it’s obvious that they did not intend for his original deaths to signify that we was anything other than a trickster.

But i could just be harping on that one because i personally was really upset that the trickster, one of the best pagan bad-guys on this show, has been wrapped up into the angel story line. That all said, i LOVED Gabriel, and i loved the trickster, it’s just dealing with them as one and the same that i have problems with. Admittedly, i’ll get over them though if they use him again and use him well. I’m a fan after all, my discontent of the moment is frequently turned into joy down the line.

As for Crowley/Alistair, again, i can’t agree that they’re the same situation. We met Alistair very organically: Dean came back from hell, we knew bad stuff happened there, then we meet a demon who knew Dean while he was down there. there was no ret-conning involved at all, it was just the introduction of a new character.

Crowley, however, is being used as a plot device for why the Colt is still around. Again, it’s a good ret-con in that it doesn’t contradict anything we’ve SEEN on screen, but it’s bad in that it contradicts something we’ve HEARD. I’ll be the first to admit that Bella was not a reliable witness… “when she breathes the air comes out crooked!” And maybe Lilith didn’t say who she gave the Colt to, but again, it just feels really shoe-horned in to me.

I feel that the show, while always sort of flying by the seat of their pants, did a better job of not letting the seams show. Though perhaps it’s just that i’m more aware of their production process now then i was i the first few seasons. If i wasn’t so very aware that the angel story line was a last minute fix-it for getting Dean out of hell, i might not be aware that all this stuff is ret-conning. That’s a good argument for me to keep my nose out of the behind the scenes stuff until the end of the show! ;-)

And i don’t quite agree with Kevin’s last line up there, about Sam being the Lucifer vessel and then dean being the Michael vessel. I’m pretty sure they didn’t (and still don’t) have the whole vessel thing worked out. One of my biggest complaints at the moment is how muddy the angel mythology is. i feel they did a much better job with the demons in adding new things while staying consistent to the old. Now, for vesseldom, we have blood lines, choice, specific vessels (though alternates are also ok?) and various other things. Again, i feel that the seams are showing far more than they used to.

Ack, this post is once again epic in length, i apologize.

  70. Anyone care to speculate on why the Trickster-turned-powerful-archangel-Gabriel didn’t seem to have the power to snap his fingers and turn on the sprinklers for himself?

    Comment by bestshowfan — November 19, 2009 @ 8:32 am

  71. Seriously, wasn’t Gabriel able to still affect the weather when we saw him encircled?

Also, what, the oil just burns FOREVER? I mean, it wouldn’t have eventually gone out on its own? I mean, a devil’s trap is DRAWN, so i get that it lasts until broken, but fire has this tendency to, you know, BURN the source material away.

Er, i think i’m getting into “why don’t we put bungies on these things?” territory there, sorry.

As a nice fanwank, maybe Gabriel, like Cas, is cut off from heaven and doesn’t have the full range of powers? I mean, obviously still very powerful, but no longer able to spread his power beyond the fire ring? Though he was still able to bring Cas back, so that doesn’t even work. Damn. I got nothing.

  72. Well, that makes two of us that got nothing!! It feels a little bit like I’m standing on the edge of a great big hole with a sign on the edge that says “Plot. Be careful.” As for the fire, I assumed because it was lit with holy oil or something like that, that it would be eternal unless turned off. I just didn’t realize the common everyday ordinary ceiling sprinkler was awesome enough to do the job (presuming the archangel can get somebody with a nice heart, like Dean, to trip the fire alarm switch for him).

  73. I really enjoyed reading your comments, Daniel. A breath of fresh air.

As for my comment about Sam being Lucifer’s vessel, I understand that Kripke didn’t have that planned until at least season 4, but the way events have played out over the course of the entire story, this is the plot-line that they have been pimping to us.

Sam was chosen by Azazel, he came through the trials as the last demon child alive, and then went on to break Lucifer out. Maybe that was only Azazel’s purpose for Sam all along, to break Lucifer out, but with Sam doing all that, and having demon blood in him, it is the logical thing to think that Sam would be Lucifer’s vessel. It also serves the story well in my opinion and ties into the mythology that was there at the start of the show.

The idea presented by Gabriel is ridiculous, and brings up a number of other questions.

  74. “he came through the trials as the last demon child alive”

Not entirely true, but you know what I mean.

I too hope you are right and they have not yet figured out the reasoning for them being the vessels.

  75. Kevin,

Totally agree with your break-down of why Sam is the Lucifer vessel.

  76. Actually I have just recently read all of this and I laugh at Kevin Lee and GR19 with the quick inserts of comment from Sky in there. LOL… Going all fan boy real quick… But why dont you guys use the Motto of “Free to be you and me.” Meaning why cant you two agree to disagree about each others comments and throw the hatchet away. I mean on some level you guys and single gal, have one thing in common already, EACH OF YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT THE SHOW! which is a good thing :) Because if it weren’t for the show than none of us would be here right now… Yes I know this is about a MONTH late but I thought my two cents on it was useful.

With my peace being said, I want to add, for those who have read Revelations (As the creative team of SN have and currently are.) They must surely know that JESUS is born to the world in his second coming, and strikes Lucifer and his army down. Jesus second coming isn’t the peaceful cleric preaching the word, he’s a warrior, who is in it for the HUMANS not the Angels of Heaven or Demons.

With that being said, I want to address Kevin Lee, You are right in the essence of the anologies are right, but you got one thing wrong, I don’t think that Dean is really Michaels Vassal, I think he is the second coming of Jesus. Because he’s never knocked hardcore on god, he just was the type of person BORN to the Father who Hunted, and his mothers name is Mary. His father in season 1-2 wasn’t around much, which goes with the god analogy which is still good. Sam on the other hand is the Jealous Brother, because daddy didn’t give him the attention, and left his father, which makes good sense on why Sam is Lucifers first choice draft pick.

I think Jeffery Dean Morgan should come back for season Finale though, in some way, because this quest STARTED BECAUSE OF HIM! IT SHOULD FINISH WITH HIM! Take season six budget and pay the bill. I would much rather see the brothers finish in a glorious fashion than have it dragged out, but another part of me thinks “Wouldn’t it be interesting if we got a Cas spin off?” I mean seriously… With the resources he has, and his angelic abilities, he would make for one HELL of a Hunter. Team him up with Bobby and bang you got a good show. You could even have the Winchester Brothers make a few appearances. Because they have faced a lot of things that Cas just doesn’t have knowledge about.

As for Bobby, I think Bobby is going to be the life savor this season, I mean he’s holed up with nothing to do but READ, eventually he will come across something, or some way to make a weapon that will destroy angels and demons since they are born of the same thing but evolution has changed them… one evolved of light, one of darkness. Nough said, goodnight, and GR19, Peace Out! :)

  77. I have really enjoyed season five. I have really enjoyed the humour. It has quite a comedic feel to it but still retains the supernatural element.
I think the two stars are brilliant and they spark off each other well.
I’t is a bit sketchy as far as storyline goes but I’m ok with that. I just enjoy the way the two brothers interact and Jensen Ackles is very entertaining.
