TV Guide Magazine Interviews Sera Gamble
Well, it’s not a new episode, but there sure are some juicy bits in this interview with Sera Gamble from TV Guide Magazine. The interview is a wee bit spoilery, bless Sera for that, so it’s after the jump. And a big thanks for the interview scoop from our friends at SpoilerTV.
It’s going to be a long lonely holiday season for Supernatural fans. Following last night’s emotional cliffhanger—two beloved characters died, then Death (one of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse) was exhumed—Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester will be missing from TV screens for a two-month hiatus. So we asked executive producer Sera Gamble to share some upcoming plot points.
We need some teasers to get us through a cold dark December without Supernatural. What can we look forward to?
We are continuing to deal with the overarching storyline of the Apocalypse. The personal cost for our boys is real; they will suffer in every possible way. This season has been really funny but also very dark. The Supernatural palate has escalated due to the Apocalypse. We’re able to tell stories on a slightly larger scale.
Can you give us some peeks at those stories?
We have several closed-ended episodes. In the first [“Sam, Interrupted,” airing January 14], the boys are contacted by a hunter who had worked a case that was so traumatic that he went crazy. He’s been voluntarily living in an insane asylum and something not right is happening there, and he calls the boys. So Sam and Dean check themselves in. The challenge of an episode like this is that it’s well-trodden territory in horror movies and television shows, so we made sure we had a different take. You don’t have to be crazy to be a hunter, but it helps. That’s what Sam and Dean explore. We’re also doing our twist on a zombie story. It’s different from the Croatoan virus zombies. These are post-modern with lots of personality.
Don’t they chomp on flesh?
I can’t say too much. [Laughs] They’re not necessarily bad zombies. At least not right off the bat. They’re zombies that make you think.
Will we finally see God?
Not any time soon, but people are definitely looking for him. It’s an ongoing quest for Castiel [Misha Collins]. It’s vitally important for him and increasingly interesting for the boys. Historically Sam has more faith. The jury is out for Dean as to whether or not God currently exists. We might be the only show on the CW actively searching for God.
Has God been cast yet? Misha Collins told me it would be cool if it were Miley Cyrus.
[Laughs] I can’t tell you anything about God.
What’s Lucifer’s next move?
You’ll be seeing more of Lucifer. I really dig the actor [Mark Pellegrino]. You’ll learn more about how his taking Sam over figures into his plans. And how he came to find Nick, who’s his current [host]. And you will definitely start to understand the Archangel Michael’s perspective. He’s trying to become embodied and Dean is the only possible vessel for him. He’s not walking around in the here and now, so we have to be creative in introducing Michael. You will meet him.
Are there any holiday deconstructions this year, like you’ve done with the pagan roots of Christmas and Halloween?
We will be doing a very dark and sinister Valentine’s Day episode. It’s an exploration of the nature of love and desire, which can be very destructive.
Anything else you can share?
We’re also doing a body swap episode, Sam with a human—that’s all I will say. Fans have been clamoring for it for five seasons. The last thing I can tell you is that we will be further exploring the secrets of the Winchester family and Sam and Dean’s past. There’s more to reveal there.
Any Winchester family members showing up?
Yeah, actually. You might get a flashback here and there.
Still hoping for a return from Jeffrey Dean Morgan?
Let me tell you, we’ll do back flips the day we hear he’s available to play John Winchester again.

*SPOILER* I read in an Eric Kripke Interview that Michael will finally make his appearance in an episode where Sam and Dean go back and see their mom and dad as newlyweds. Michael’s “the one who kicked Lucifer’s ass the first time and is now gearing up for the rematch,” Kripke says. And the boys will visit heaven for the first time.

That sounds like episode 13. Do you still have the link for this article? I hadn’t heard anything about Sam and Dean actually making their way into Heaven, but it sounds like it will be interesting to see — especially since we never got to see Hell.

I think the entire writers/producers/cast of SN from Eric down just enjoy watching us work ourselves into a frenzy of eager anticipation I do wonder how, since Dean is not playing ball in the “major invasion of personal space” dept, that Michael is going to manifest, though of course he could choose Lucifer’s route and pick a make-do-and-mend host, maybe even Ben Braedan (see below).
I must admit though, I know Eric likes to keep fans on their toes, but his persistent tendency of killing off characters wholesale concerns me. I know the fans have a lot of animosity to the female characters (with possible exception of Ellen) but the more of the recurrings he kills off, the more likely he is to have to resort to implausible/cliched writing devices further down the road to pull off some plot point the show could have done with more originality and flair had a recurring character (e.g., Ash or Bela) been alive but off-screen (Bela was a global occult artifact thief, and could have been “abroad” for instance). Eric’s “pool” of characters he can use to keep the episode in it’s 40 min time slot by doing convenient “exposition/explanation” (e.g., Bobby)is shrinking like a pond in a drought; I seriously hope that isn’t going to compromise the writing down the line - we’ve already had what appears to a be a script-patch job with the “oops we need to fix this…we’ll just have to make the Trickster = 1 of the 4 archangels” episode.
SN has always shown such originality and creativity in it’s use of mythology - with the vampires and shapeshifters, etc., and it would be a shame to lose that because they’ve written themselves into a corner. It’s why I was so disappointed with Sera Gamble’s writing of the Lisa/Ben Braeden episode - the show only had 40 mins I know but Lisa came off, right at the end, as a superficial, promiscuous tramp, which clearly wasn’t the intent, not to mention completely implausible - since Ben’s conception was an accident, was she in the habit of drawing vials of blood from her sleeping lovers just in case? Blood tests are nowhere near as reliable as DNA, and Ben was too obviously Dean’s mini-me not to be his biological child - which may help Eric Kripke and the writers out of a writing/”we’ve killed off a character we need” problem by making Ben Michael’s host in the same way that Castiel could make Jimmy Novak’s daughter his host? Since Jimmy Novak is, presumably, still going strong inside his own head and probably offering pithy critique and sarcastic commentary to Castiel every few minutes, will we see Jimmy’s wife and daughter return at some point - will they encounter Lisa and Ben Braedan (who now know what’s out there) and decide there’s safety in numbers, only to end up being targeted by assorted bad guys after a girl who’s the daughter of angel’s host and a boy who’s the son of Michael’s “vessel” and the nephew of Lucifer’s intended party animal? Obviously none of the above may ever happen in SN, but at least they have the chance to do so because the characters weren’t summarily killed off.
