‘SPN’ Casts New Winchester Relative
We’ve met a handful of Sam and Dean’s family, and now we can add one more to the list. Keep reading for the latest casting spoilers.
Gil McKinney (perhaps best known as the TA Julie Taylor dated in the final season of Friday Night Lights) has been cast as Henry Winchester, aka John Winchester’s dad.
He will pop up in the 12th episode of the season, “As Time Goes By.”
How, you may ask, can someone who’s younger than Jensen Ackles play Sam and Dean’s other grandpa? It involves time travel as Henry will be zapped into the present.
The show has revealed quite a bit about the maternal side of the Winchester family tree, but this is the first real glimpse at John’s family. From what we do know, John wasn’t aware of the whole Hunter lifestyle when he met Mary, so t should be interesting to see how Henry reacts to all of this.
The episode will air in late January.

Finally, I’ve been waiting for some of the winchester family tree.
Comment by AW — November 30, 2012 @ 6:45 pm
Okay so we’re going to spend a whole episode about a Winchester who’s been dead a long time just to give more background to a character that hasn’t been around for years? Don’t you think you guys should stick to the big picture? Besides the time thing is boring and old. What does their grandfather have to do with anything and how does this serve the story?
This season is by far the worst, you know it’s bad when you pass season 6.
Comment by Sara — November 30, 2012 @ 7:54 pm
@Sara
Why do you think giving more backstory and character development is a bad thing? You know that in season 4 episode 3 and season 5 episode 13 entitled “The song remains the same” and “In the beggining”, they pretty much did the same thing. So what, John’s father hasn’t been around for years? This is the reason why they should explore this story into something more. Episodes like these are always going to be consistent and connect with the overall story, and that is what this season has been doing, is being consistent, unlike season 7 which had no plan at all, season 8 looks like it has potential. I think season 8 has been the best season since season 5, in a matter the show is returning to it’s roots, yet becoming more subtle and developed. So if you think this is by far the worst season, why do you keep watching it? P.S, I know it is a matter of opinion and this is a forum to share on, so be it.

Sara, Ozzie and Sheri are just so predictable in their commentary. I could have predicted post nearly word to word after I read that this news post is about casting.

Granpa Winchester?? this is going to be a vey exciting episode (ep12)John’s father..how nice..is he going to be as charming and sexy as John..!!We’ve met Mary’s Daddy/ big Granpa Samuel and now the boys are going to meet their dear ‘Winchester Granpa’in another time-travelling episode..Can’t wait for this ep…

@muub Wow I’m blown away by your “wit.” Aren’t you oh so special? I don’t care if you don’t like it, that’s how I feel about it. I think it distracts from the story. When Sam and Dean have become supporting characters in their own show, you don’t need to spend time on stuff like this.

@muub And I predicted some smart ass like you that gets their panties in a twist everytime something DARES not like something you do..would bitch about it instead of offering an actual opinion.

@sara-there is more to this story about the winchester grandfather other than just giving us backstory for sam’s and dean’s roots. (although i really don’t see why that is a bad thing)-as long as the episode isn’t JUST backstory. and from what i have read/seen about this episode it is not JUST backstory.

oh and i just thought of something-can this give us a door way to having jdm comeback? i would absolutely LOVE the idea of him comeing back for an episode or two. i know he keeps in contact with jensen and jdm said he wants to comback. would be cool.

Wanna bet that the writers forget that John came from a “family of mechanics” per In The Beginning, and Henry won’t be that.
I don’t know anything about what this episode is supposed to be about, and I don’t know the actor that has been cast, but I seem to recall there’s a girl hunter named Josie Sands, a Katherine Hepburn-esque kind of character, coming up. Is this the one she’s going to be in, too?

poor winchesters bros their tree keep being a mistery first the campbell mistery now the winchester mistery.
sheri maybe mary and john believed that. that john family members only were mech but maybe were something more something secret
it seems everyones lied to john his parents his wife his parents in law

Why is everyone being so negative? this is the best show on television and if you are a big enough fan to be commenting on the latest blogs about a TV show, you shouldn’t be complaining. I think it’s interesting for the writers to cast somebody from the Winchester bloodline. Other family characters are important to the stories of Sam and Dean. This show hasn’t always been about the main fight or the gore and the monsters. It’s also about how two brothers fight through everything now matter what crap gets thrown at them and it’s fun to see who and where they came from. I can’t wait for this episode, I’m sure it will be full of family drama and butt loads of smart ass comments from Dean. To the full cast and crew of this AWESOME show, keep up the good work. And try not to torture us fans to long with your insufferable winter hiatus.

Hmm. Given that John Winchseter, winsome as he was, was kind of a (insert your favorite four-letter word here) and that his parents required cherubim intervention not to hate each other… this could be very interesting. What about his family made John that way? Was his military service an act of rebellion or escape? Personally, I’m hoping that Sam finds a way to greatness that doesn’t involve killing - like becoming a healer or teacher. So I’m kind of hoping the Winchesters have that in their bloodline. Remember their bloodline is special - and if the Campbells are hunters, maybe the Winchesters are something else entirely.
God I love this show.
I agree with Brie. I like a bitch session as much as the next gal, but I watched Hunterus heroici today and I’m still smiling every time I think about it. Sigh. New epis every week. Happiness.

@ damn: I love Carver episodes, but for the last three years, his episodes have been support character centric. They’re still good ones, though.
@ animal #22: Huh. It could be good. I liked In the Beginning and The Song Remains the Same, but I’m leary that canon won’t be paid attention to again. I hope it’s not introducing a love interest for Dean and, through that, he comes to understand why Sam would leave him to die for a girl.
This season is so jumbled up, though, I’m hesitant to even try to guess what the episodes are about.
Comment by Sheri — December 2, 2012 @ 10:36 am
I agree with Sara about this season. Stories and plots suck. I keep waiting to be on the edge or laughing hilariously at Dean’s jokes. Maybe the writers need to go back and look at previous seasons and see what worked and what didnt. Good thing I bought the whole series DVDs to watch. Signed, a fan from the beginning and beyond no matter what.
Comment by Maya Limon — December 2, 2012 @ 10:46 am
sheri-actually this story line is similar to one of the supernatural books i read-but dean and sam went back in time-and dean fell in love with a female hunter. yea-i know the writers do seem to forget canon-however henry could be a mechanic -he just joins a cult. i remember somewhere reading that dean says to sam in an episode that “one of us should be happy”. we will see if that comes about.
Comment by animal — December 2, 2012 @ 10:49 am
@ animal: I keep waiting for Carver to introduce a love interest for Dean. He seems to have an inclination for that sort of story, and this may be the character he chooses to do that with. It may not happen this season, but I fully expect it to happen before the series ends. I’ll be so pissed off if he does, but he seems to be redoing every other storyline that’s been done on the show, and that god-awful Lisa/Ben thing was a whole season long.
I also think he’s steering the series to more mainstream CW crap to capture what appears to be a large number of newer and younger viewers. One Tree Hill SPN, you might say.
I really, really hope he doesn’t go that route, but I’m am very much disappointed in what Carver has brought to the show. I really had high hopes for him.
Comment by Sheri — December 2, 2012 @ 1:58 pm
i don’t mind love interest if it makes sense. dean needs a female hunter-its who he is-i liked jo _i know i lot of people didn’t but i did. the actress had chemistry with jensen so it worked for me. i didn’t mind lisa-didn’t like ben though-i thought they wrote him kinda whiny. the actress though who played lisa had absolutely NO chemistry with jensen. how that is even possible is beyond me since he takes cues from who he is acting with and works with them but that actress was just horrendous with him. the idea of that story was good but the actual mechanics of it was wrong. so it didn’t work with alot of fans.
i agree about steering the series to fit the CW formula . i also believe that pedowitz and carver are still listening to the fans (the minority of fans at that) and not writing the actual story they want to tell. they are still throwing in destiel innuendos and keeping characters that they don’t really need and not writing the horror/mystery episodes that made spn so differant. it is basically soap opera now. the music that acompanies the episodes isn’t even scary anymore it is more touchy feely music. have you noticed that??? i am hanging in there for j2 but alot will depend on if i get a dean arc this season if i stay -in otherwords benny stays around. i am done with the “whats wrong with sam, whats up with cas” stuff. i love sam/jared but 7 seasons of sam being screwed around with is enough for me. it goes without saying but i am sick of dean not having a story of his own. i am sick of sam and cas screwing dean and dean just taking it. we’ll see what happens.
Comment by animal — December 2, 2012 @ 3:17 pm
I hate even the idea of love interest. I want this show to go back to the grit, action, and drama that it’s supposed to be….and some believable hunters for support characters would be nice. I think those days are gone, though.
I hated Lisa. I didn’t care for the actress in the role, but I think her role was written badly and she couldn’t do much better. I wanted to puke every time I saw that whiny adolescent, Ben.
I hated Jo worse than Lisa, though. She looked like a wannabe hunter playing at being tough, was completely the wrong actress to put in as a possible love interest with Jensen, was dressed and acted like a teenage flirt with a smart mouth. I wished they would have dumped Jo and kept Ellen, though. I loved Ellen.
Yes, I have noticed the music. I think Carver must be a classical music fan. While I thought it was ingenious to use Hall of the Mountain King in the Halloween episode, and to play it first in Dean’s flashback while driving the car and then to have Benny whistle it was awesome. Ode to Joy I could have lived without. However, with Sam’s soap going on, I fully expect more awful music.
Yeah, I’m down to watching the Dean, Dean/Benny, Dean/Cas scenes. I don’t even care about the story or mytharc anymore. Couldn’t care less what happens with it.
I half watch Sam/Amelia — usually play on the computer while they’re on, and the second watch I just FF through them. I think that this is a worse effort at love interest than Dean/Lisa was. That actress is a cold fish and gives no warmth out at all in her performance, and it’s affecting Jared’s acting. I’m still marveling at a fully dressed post-cloital scene in bed, and then when he kissed her this last episode, it looked like he hestitated and planted one on a cold fish. On top of that, what close to 30-year old would let her dad come into her house and treat her ‘friend’, let alone boyfriend like that?
Comment by Sheri — December 2, 2012 @ 4:42 pm
Wow @Sheri great post…right on target.
Comment by ozzie — December 2, 2012 @ 4:53 pm
Personally the only scenes I can stomach are the ones that just have Sam and Dean. I hate Benny, I hate Cas and I hate Amelia. Any scenes with these characters are unbearable. Nothing about this season interests me at all except for how fluffy Sam’s hair looks in the flashbacks.
Comment by Sara — December 2, 2012 @ 5:28 pm
@ Sera: If they start using Cas as an all-powerful Mr. Fix-It again, I’ll go back to hating him. I thought they did well with him in this one — he didn’t interfer with the brothers at all. I do prefer Dean doing his old one-liner Deanism lines, but I suppose they have to do something with the angel.
I do like Benny. I think he’s a great character and very well acted, and I thought the Purgatory scenes were some of the best in the series. I hope they don’t dirty him up just to make Dean emo again. I also expect him to be killed off by the end of the season. I also am worried that now that Purgatory is over, the action will slow to a crawl and more teenage heroes, women hunters, and fragile elderly will be saving the Winchesters’ butts.
I’ve never understood the infatuation with Sam’s hair. Surely the show should offer more to talk about than Sam’s latest do. His hair always looks greasy to me — I think they use too much hair product. I think I noticed it was cut this last episode, though, and it looked better.
Comment by Sheri — December 2, 2012 @ 6:15 pm
Sam’s hair should have been cut a LONG time ago. The actor looks good with it but the character loses so much believability when he goes up to a real lawman and flashes a badge. Yeah, right.

Comment by AW — December 3, 2012 @ 4:52 am
On my list for epis I’d like to see is one I call “Jesus Heist Superstart”, where Sam gets possessed by a Throne (an angel that transports god and is supposed to be half physical and half spiritual, enlightening mankind).
He takes over Sam and starts playing Jesus (cue the goatee and flowing robes), while trying to find an artifact stolen from Heaven. To get Sam back, Dean and Cas have to get the artifact and bargain with the angel. Eventually, he can’t leave, since he’s more physical than most angels - they have to use pain to get him out. Dean won’t let him be crucified, which is Cas’s suggestion, but instead get Cas to touch his soul.
I mean - Jared could TOTALLY be an awesome Jesus. Loincloth and all folks. Plus it would give him new direction. Sigh.
Comment by t1gerlily — December 3, 2012 @ 9:57 am
Er. Which is why he can’t cut his hair. Because it’s necessary for the whole messiah-of-all-mankind think. Like Elvis and the white jumpsuit. When he cuts his hair he looks like a Bichon Frise. And I don’t think a bichon-frise-of-all-mankind will be too impressive.

Actually, it would be pretty funny if Thor showed up and/or possessed Sam - because Castiel is the angel of Thursday (Thor’s day) and they’d probably have to throw down to settle whose day it actually was.

I had high hopes for Carver too, but it all seems a rehash of previous seasons–closely mirroring season 4. Dean coming back from a period in purgatory (hell in 4) and he rather than Sam having a close friend who is by nature evil which upsets his brother. Castiel and Dean forging a relationship and Cas playing a key but undetermined role in the overall plot. Time visit to a grandfather season 4, Sam’s behavior while Dean’s gone not explained until late and explained in flashbacks–episode 9 season 4 (Last Summer). It’s like a CW version of season 4 with Bobby replaced by a younger actor and even the grandfather replaced by a young actor. Our guys replaying a version of season 4 as bystanders to others who now play the key roles.
What’s missing is the collection of truly menacing evil characters targeting the Winchesters. Castiel is back to Cas the friendly angel, gone his fearful qualities, and Crowley appears only occasionally–and only one time as truly evil. Dean and Sam are only secondary targets of those evil forces; they are targets but only because they are associated with the primary target the young actor playing Kevin. Our heroes really don’t seem in peril this season. Sam could drop out of hunting and Dean might have some bad friends–not exactly spine chilling. Hope it changes course, but it’s becoming the SPN-lite or junior version of SPN–tailored for a younger CW audience for whom the producers must be careful not to give any nightmares. Carver’s contribution so far has been absolutely devoid of originality in plot; in fact it’s been entirely derivative of past season ideas; his contribution has been to bring in younger actors to repeat past roles and story lines.
I do like the idea of exploring the Winchester background, but fear it will be one more new character for Dean (Sam’s the usual time-traveler) to tell us about.
Comment by CaseyT — December 4, 2012 @ 8:23 am
Tell me if this is menacing enough. After spending years locked in the cage together Lucy and Mike are in heaven preparing for a war against Team free will. huh how you like those apples.
Comment by AW — December 4, 2012 @ 8:36 am
OOh. You think M&L are Naomi’s boss? And they’re obsessed with getting back in Sam and Dean’s pants and starting apocalypse part deux? I wouldn’t mind that if it meant that they decided they needed enough juice to really take on M&L and went on quests to get it - Dean deciding to use the tablets to try and become an angel (the way Enoch turned into Metatron - betcha didn’t know humans could do that) Sam of course teaming up with Meg to topple Crowley and become King of Hell. Like they say… when you can’t beat ‘em, replace ‘em.
Comment by t1gerlilly — December 4, 2012 @ 12:24 pm
That would make an awesome story IMO.
Comment by AW — December 4, 2012 @ 12:30 pm
I was thinking more of a personal vengeance kind of thing. Lucy and mike team up and command the angels in a new plot to destroy the ones responsible for locking them up and stopping the apocalypse. They are going to try to kill the winchesters and cas. Now that is what I call an ark.
Comment by AW — December 4, 2012 @ 2:28 pm
Yeah, but unless you want to throw out all the canon to date they’d be hopelessly outmatched. That’s the “going out in a blaze of glory” ending, and while I can see Sam and Dean ‘thema and louise’ing it, I don’t want to see the Impala go out that way.
Anyway, I’m still stuck on the idea of a Cas v Thor smackdown. You know Thor would be a total bridezilla … “But it’s my DAY!” blubber, blubber, hair flip. With Cas standing there embarassed until Dean finally goes “Shut up, you big baby”… “But it’s my DAY! I didn’t even get the weekend. And now you want to take it away from me.” Blubber, blubber, *smack*.
“Get a hold of yourself…” he he he he Sorry. As George Carlin said “These are the thoughts that kept me out of the really good schools.”
Comment by t1gerlilly — December 4, 2012 @ 2:38 pm
But seriously, take his hammer away and Thor would totally turn into a little bitch. I mean, we all know what that hammer is compensating for . . . incredible, cosmic power… itty bitty bikini space.

I think Mike and LU would have to be stupid to go after Cas. I think anyone would have to be stupid to go after him. that angel has incredible luck. which isn’t surprising seeing how he seems to have god on his side. god or someone really poweful ressurected him the last two times an arcangel killed him. and according to naomi a lot of angels lost their lives trying to get him out of purgatory. I think he’s far to important in the bigger picture for Mike or Lu to kill. maybe his constant resurrection is because he is jesus…whaaa? lol.
as for grandpa winchester, I can’t wait to see this play out, after all the winchesters are the blood line of mike.
@ 48 After the “hammer of the Gods” episode I don’t but much stock in the powers and abilities “of these so called gods” i think cas take thor on and bring him down….seriously what is he without his hammer, which is currently with the winchesters?
Comment by WTW — December 5, 2012 @ 10:43 am
OK. So we know that future!Cas turned human when he was cut off from Heaven. Plus most ‘fallen’ angels fall in love with a human. So maybe that’s why M&L are having Naomi make Cas hang out with the Winchesters. They’re hoping to weaken him and turn him human so they can get the Winchesters. I’m not saying he’s going to fall in love with Dean because that’s already happened but it would solve a couple problems for the writers - human!Cas can’t be Mr. Fix-It, he can be an important hostage that makes the boys work together when they are estranged, and he would have a real place in their world - not to mention bringing out Dean’s protective streak.. Anyway. All this gave me another idea for an epi I want to see, which I’m going to put on my blog as soon as I find time to actually start it, which I was supposed to do days ago, but ended up commenting here, ’cause y’all are so much fun to talk to.
Comment by t1gerlilly — December 5, 2012 @ 3:29 pm
There is no Destiel in Canon, only in bad SPN fanfiction. Cas is not “in love” with Dean. They don’t googly eye each other. They are good friends, almost brothers (at times I wonder why?). It is beyond ridiculous to think they will ever have a love story. You well as say there is Wincest too, that is just as likey (100% not gonna ever happen).
Comment by twinster — December 5, 2012 @ 6:49 pm
Sorry, that was a little bit of bait. I think you can see it either way. (which is another way of saying I haven’t made up my mind about it). I pretty much anyone would have to admit that both the actors and the writers have played with the idea that Dean is attracted to guys (Dr. Sexy, Eliot Ness, etc). I kind of like that as an aspect of his character - because you know it’s a part of himself he would have sacrificed for his family and to try and keep his dad’s love. And honestly, it doesn’t really make a difference to his character, he’s still fiercly protective and loving to his family; a self-sacrificing, tough, righteous man with a warrior’s heart. I definitely think you can argue he’s not interested in Cas…but I don’t look at my friends with that mix of terror and longing that Dean does to Cas. Maybe it’s about spiritual doubt, but, uh…. I doubt it.

How to destroy a television show? Watch Seasons 1-3 of Supernatural. Now watch 6-8.
1) Take away all hope, goals, aspirations, love, or loved ones.
2) Remove anything unique to the show. At least the car and music are back, but what person who grew up in the Midwest says Bupkiss? New Jersey Dean, anyone? And where’s the love and the humor?
3) Turn your heroes into monsters. Season 8 Dean is as twisted and evil as the monsters in Season 1. And when does Sam REVERSE EXORCISE A DEMON, SO TWO FOR ONE, HE CAN KILL THE INNOCENT TOO!!!
4) Ignore demographics. Really? You think 18-49 year old women are watching Supernatural for how many blood splatters or beheadings you can show? Go back and watch the first season again if you’ve forgotten what the show is about.
4) Make the show so dark and bitter that the most loyal fans turn away in droves.
And that is how you turn a television show from a beloved series to a show only an actor’s mother would watch…maybe.
For me, I’m going to pretend it stopped at Season 3 with Dean in Hell and make my own storyline from there…because I know I can do better.

My goodness. The show is still doing time travel stuff?
Comment by bestshowfan — December 16, 2012 @ 9:00 pm
I enjoy the time travel stories and I know some people are saying there’s no point bringing Grandpa Winchester back since John’s long gone but personally I disagree. We know almost nothing about this side of the family and I think it could be interesting to see. Also there’s something special about the Winchester blood right? That’s why Sam and Dean were chosen as Micheal and Lucifer’s vessels, the angels said it was their destiny, that it was “in their blood”. I always thought it seemed like there was more to learn about that, maybe this is it?
Also this is to no one in particular. Fair enough if you don’t like a certain story line or aspect of the show etc. feel free to voice your opinions but I think if your just going to complain about how much you hate the show now and how it should have ended seasons ago then the way I see it is if your not enjoying it stop watching, Nobody’s forcing you to.
Comment by Shannon — December 28, 2012 @ 5:50 pm
The point in putting out what was once beloved and what is now wrong is that MAYBE? someone out there is scanning the comment board to see what people think and MAYBE? they might fix the show and bring good, funny Dean back.
I used to love the show and I want whoever is putting it out to return it to what it was.
As for not watching…that’s the problem isn’t it? Most people won’t voice their complaints and the show WILL get cancelled if it keeps losing viewers.
Comment by JT — December 30, 2012 @ 6:23 pm
I think this is the best show on TV, by far the most entertaining. The acting could not be any better. Right now I am watching reruns of season 6 and have caught season 7 occasionally. Only seen one show in season 7 that I was really disappointing in and that was the cartoon show (can’t remember the title). That one I thought was really lame. But that was the only one. I think bringing on the John’s dad is a good idea, it opens up possible direction involving more of that side of the family and gives the show a longer life span.
