Post your thoughts on tonight’s Wizard of Oz episode, with the return of Charlie. Read my full recap HERE or keep reading for my quick analysis.
After the heavy episodes about Sam’s battle with death and Cas learning about humanity, it was nice to save a cute episode about magic and home. Charlie always lightens the mood, and the Wizard of Oz tie-ins were all clever.
I loved Crowley’s multiple Wicked references (so he’s a fan of Broadway musicals and HBO’s Girls?). The revised Oz tale was also great, and I desperately want a spin-off with Felicia Day fighting the rebellion in the Emerald City.
Also, my MVP for this episode was the special effects team. The Witch turning into smoke was cool, and the little glimmers of Oz were incredibly well done, especially all those flying monkeys. Between this and the angels falling from the season 8 finale, the visual effects team on this show has been doing some of their best work yet.
Most importantly, I love how the episode used Oz to address the theme of finding a home. Sam’s unwillingness to settle down makes sense given his past, and this story, with the message of “There’s no place like home,” was a great way to deal with their living situation and the Men of Letters HQ.
Finally, any show that references Game of Thrones (and calls out Joffrey for being a dick) is super cool.
