“Stairway to Heaven” Clip

Check out this clip from next week’s angel-heavy episode in which Sam’s whole “I’ll let my brother die” belief seems to be going out the window as he becomes more concerned about the effects of the magical First Blade.

  1. Sam still cares about his brother. He still loves him. So of course he’s worried about the effects of the Mark of Cain on Dean.
The whole point of this season hasn’t been that Sam doesn’t care. It’s been that Sam is tired of their relationship getting in the way of their duty.
He’s tired of making deals. He’s tired of them bailing each other out.
And he’s sickened, utterly sickened, that he chose not to sacrifice himself and close the gates of Hell.
He’s sickened that he let an angel possess him when he was ready to die, and that that angel used his body to murder Kevin.
Sam has come to grips with the fact that he’ll never have the normal life he’s always wanted. Jessica is dead. He had to abandon that other boring woman from all the flashbacks (you know, the one he had a dog with). He’s accepted that he will be a hunter until the day he dies, and that he will probably die on a hunt, as is the way of hunters.
And he believes that if he must be a hunter, then he’s going to do it right. He can’t make mistakes. He must be willing to make sacrifices.
He can’t let relationships get in the way, even the relationship he has with his brother.
Sam is now a hunter first, everything else comes second.

  3. Is that the same song that Lucifer was playing in Sam’s head to keep him awake back in season 7?

And @brx, I totally agree with you. Sam now knows that he can’t serve two masters. Putting what Dean wanted in the church before the welfare of others has shown him that.

  4. No, the song that Lucifer sang him in season 7 was Stairway to Heaven.

    I loved this clip!

  5. Good clip.
I love the Dean-waking-Sam part where they seem like the brothers we know again. That’s the type of thing the Dean we know would do (I mean waking Sam that way)… and that’s the way the Sam we know would react. And it ends with Sam joining Dean in the next room and willing to go with it. Classic brotherly stuff.
Of course Dean will not give in that easily about the First Blade. We know that.

It’s a difficult line they walk. Because of their upbringing and their *very unusual* (to put it mildly) lives, they both feel responsible for more than they should have to… or anyone should have to…
Family comes first, but does family come first if lives are at stake? If the world is at stake? How do you resolve that?
Any one of us could probably save some lives somewhere if we completely abandoned our families and completely dedicated ourselves to a certain cause. However, we cannot and should not abandon our families.
Family is the essence, beyond just our material or physical lives. It all begins and ends with family. Supernatural (the real Supernatural when the powers-that-be don’t mess it up badly) has always had that at its heart and in its soul.

Anyway, just some thoughts that came to mind. It was a good clip. I hope it’s an indication of the episode.

  6. who is in charge of writing this page? I think someone else who actually pays attention to this show should write these little blurbs because whoever does it now is extremely inaccurate. if the person who wrote the above actually listened and paid attention to the episode, the purge….one would realize that sam never said he wouldn’t save his brother. never…..sam told dean that under the same circumstances, roles reversed, he wouldn’t do what dean had done. sam never would have gone against dean’s wishes. if sam had known, as dean did, that the last thing dean ever would want to keep him alive was to be possessed, that he’d rather die than have his autonomy taken from him, that he wouldn’t want to become a monster or anything inhuman, sam would never override dean’s wishes. we know this to be true as sam has demonstrated this in both s3 and s8. sam loves dean with all his heart. sam loves dean enough, that if dean wanted it, preferred it, and accepted it, though it would kill sam, sam would abide dean’s wishes because he loves him that much…enough to let dean go if that’s what dean wants. just because dean only hears what he wants to hear when sam talks, that doesn’t mean it’s the actual case. it’s dean’s lack of self worth that plays a part in his inability to truly listen to what sam had said. sam said he wouldn’t do to dean what dean did to him, but all dean heard was that sam wouldn’t save him…of course that’s what he heard. dean never truly listens to sam and he’s so full of self loathing that it’s his own head he listens to. ” I wouldn’t save me so why would sam?” dean is wrong as per the usual. I get dean being wrong though….but I would think as a writer responsible for accurate pieces one would actually write the actual facts instead of their own biased and misguided opinion.

  7. This is one scary clip!

Despite being in a fortress, safe from invasion by major demons, angels, and monsters, Sam is more skittish than I’ve ever known him to be. Furthermore, he sleeps with a gun under his pillow. A gun? Is that supposed to protect him from a supernatural invader? No. But it’ll protect him from Dean.

In SN, one brother has often been frightened for the other. Now, for the first time, it seems one brother is actually frightened of the other.

  8. It seems like now Dean is Sam and Sam is Dean :-)
    The clip is amazing.
I’m so curious about Dean’s case and also, Jensen Ackles’ epic acting makes me even more curious…
    SPN Rocks….!!!!!!

  9. Annon, I think you should roll back to season 1 and take a glance look of the storyline and see how much Dean has sacrificed and suffered just for his “little brother”.
Dean made a mistake, its true, but its also his love for his brother.
Back in season 1, Sam came to the business bcz of Jessica not for his mom.
In season 2, he died and Dean made a deal and sacrificed his life.
In season 3, when Dean went to hell, Sam changed everything even Impala’s systems and lead his own life
In season 4, when Dean was right about Ruby, Sam left Dean and chose Ruby and Lucifer got out.
In season 5,instead of realizing his mistake, Sam left Dean and then “Dean” called Sam and then Sam agreed to continue the family business.
In season 6, Sam smiled when a vamp made Dean drink his blood instead of Saving Dean.(and I didn’t watch the whole season)
skip season 7 cz I didn’t watch it,
In season 8, when Dean was in Purgatory, Sam didn’t try to find him….
    and now season 9….
So, there have been countless ups and downs in the brothers’ relationship and mostly Sam was wrong. So if, this time, Dean is wrong, why can’t Sam get over Dean’s mistake and start all over again…???
I think, it is SAM’S DUTY to take care of Dean because this is what I’ve watched Dean has been doing for HIS BROTHER SAM…..

  10. Warah.

Season 1: Sam came to the business because of Jessica. His mother died when he was 6 months old. he didn’t know her. In fact, he was told not to talk about her.

Season 2: Sam died while refusing to fulfil YED’s dictated destiny for him. Dean brought him back.

Season 3: Sam fought constantly to keep Dean out of hell. When Dean would not agree with his various plans, Sam did not force it on him. When Dean died, Sam became lost in the quest for revenge. He also put an ipod jack into the car.

Season 4: Sam and Dean both worked with Ruby. Sam went with Ruby to try and stop Lucifer from rising. Sam asked Dean to come with them and Dean said no.

Season 5: Sam fixed his mistake, along with Deans mistake and the mistakes of the angels and demons.

Season 6: Sam was soulless. When he found out what he did and apologised and sought to make amends.

    Season 7: You didn’t watch.

Season 8: Sam believed Dean was dead, and in accordance with his wishes did not try and bring him back.

Season 9: Dean violated Sam, lied to him continuously (and is still doing it), said he’d do it again, got the hump when Sam said that he wouldn’t do to Dean what Dean did to Sam and then took on the MoC for no real reason.

There have been many ups and downs in the brothers relationship, and it’s not mostly Sam who was wrong. They’re pretty equal in that regard. And if only Dean got over Sam’s mistakes (and actually acknowledged his own), but we saw last season Dean certainly hadn’t gotten over what Sam did even years ago.

    Comment by Orlaith — May 9, 2014 @ 8:56 am

  11. @ JT: If I was Sam, I’d be worried enough to sleep with a gun under my pillow, too.

Sam didn’t see Dean’s TK the Blade to him, but he saw him viciously kill Abaddon, holding her in the air with the knife and then brutally hit (or stab) her. I know Sam was not concerned about that super-human strength Dean displayed or the brutality, but gave him the bitch face for sending him off to ‘protect’ him.

If I were Sam, I’d be sleeping with a gun under my pillow, too, because Dean is obviously nuts when he has the Blade in his hands.

Yet, it may be that the writer forgot the bunker is impenetrable, unless you are Charming Charlie. They seem to have forgotten that is the a ‘repository of all things supernatural discovered in the last thousand years, and that there is a cool angel-tracking table in the bunker. I bet it is better than Cas’ layout.

Or, they may have forgotten that it was always Dean who slept with a gun and/or knife under his pillow.

Or, maybe the writer just thought it would be a cool, fun scene. There’s no telling with this bunch.

    Comment by Sheri — May 9, 2014 @ 10:11 am

  12. You’re right, Sheri. Most of these scribblers would have no way of knowing the bunker is impenetrable; they’re too busy watching the Cartoon Network when SN is on. But I still hold out the hope there’s one writer in the room with the capacity for recognizing what every viewer knows–thanks to the subtext conveyed by the outstanding acting of the Js: Dean is becoming a very scary dude, and Sam has good reason to be afraid.

To me, even when he’s not holding the blade, Dean isn’t Dean. He isn’t to be trusted. In fact, I have my doubts the Blade’s in that cloth. Knowing Sam would object to his taking the weapon, Dean might have put the Blade in the trunk when Sam was still asleep.

    Comment by JT — May 9, 2014 @ 12:39 pm

  13. @ JT: Dean has openly told everyone that he is a liar; that he thinks everybody lies and that lying is a ‘gift.’ Sam, especially, should see it coming.

    Comment by Sheri — May 9, 2014 @ 12:56 pm

  14. @13 I forgot about that, Sheri. This Dean is treacherous. I don’t mind that as long as the writers don’t try to convince the audience that this Dean and OUR Dean are one and the same.

Unfortunately, the writers of this show all worship at the altar of Castiel, so I’m afraid that in an effort to excuse his vile, murderous actions, they’ll present the real Dean as being as bad or worse than the rotten angel.

When and if that happens, I’ll know this show has sacrificed its true heroes to please a Cas-fan minority, and I’ll ditch SN for good.

Sam has always been arguing Dean and its a fact.
and its also a fact that Dean loves Sam more than Sam does…
    You have to admit it!

  16. The only thing that could have made this clip better is if Sam had said “I could have shot you idjit” or jerk. And then Dean could have said “but your dancing shoes on bitch.”

    Comment by mj — May 10, 2014 @ 3:51 pm

  17. Warah. And Dean has always been arguing Sam, that’s a fact. It’s certainly not a fact that Dean loves Sam more than Sam loves Dean. How they show each other that love is different. Dean shows his loves by putting a noose around his brothers neck to keep him close, by making decisions for him because he doesn’t trust him to make decisions for himself. Sam shows he loves Dean by treating him as an individual, and not doing things he knows Dean wouldn’t want to do.

    Comment by Orlaith — May 11, 2014 @ 11:12 am

  18. I’m not surprised that Sam is sleeping with a gun under his pillow. The bunker is now where Kevin was killed, and also where Sam walked around possessed by an angel for months. I don’t think Sam will ever be able to think of the bunker as ‘safe’ or ‘home’ now.

Not surprising that Sam doesn’t trust Dean, there’s no reason why he should. With Dean being as blade hungry as he is then Sam certainly has no reason to think he’s safe in the bunker.

However, I do like the way that Sam is handling Dean here, and in the previous episode. Sam is all about giving Dean choice. We saw this back in season 5. Sam doesn’t turn his back on Dean. He believes in him and trusts that he’ll do the right thing. He’s not forcing him to do anything or tricking him into it or locking him up or calling him a monster etc, he’s giving him choice and enabling him to be able to make the right one.
