AThe
New York Post has an article about 'Supernatural' and how
Eric Kripke thinks the less you see, the scarier it is!
Sexy
things, sure. But also the kinds of jump-from-behind-the-bushes
stuff that is a staple of scary movies in the theater —
but are considered just too intense for TV. Until the WB's
latest dramatic series, "Supernatural."
In
a black '67 Chevy Impala, the Winchester boys — Sam
(Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) — are heading
down the highway, looking for their missing dad. Along the
way, they encounter and vanquish things that go bump in
the night.
"We're
making a low-budget horror movie every eight days,"
says series executive producer and writer Eric Kripke, who
also wrote the scary movie "Boogeyman."
"Our
goal is to provide a scary experience that's every bit as
satisfying as anything that's in the theaters.
"In
no way will we be a watered-down version of a feature film
or anything that's dialed back, because — for this
very good reason, and thank God it works in our genre and
no other — the less you see, the scarier it is,"
he adds.
Still,
for what's possibly the first time in history, network execs
actually asked for more blood and guts. "In the pilot,
I was very careful about describing what you saw and didn't
see," Kripke recalls.
"David
Janollari [the WB's president of entertainment] said, 'Can
you get some more blood in there?' I said, 'Can I? You bet
I can!' and then added the scene where there's a kid inside
a car — but you can't see him — and suddenly
blood hits the window. No one wants us to pull punches."
Which
is exactly how "Supernatural" intends to distinguish
itself as the scariest show on TV in a season glutted with
spooky happenings. In effect, the boys drive into a different
horror film every Tuesday night.
"We're
hoping that 'Supernatural' is a show that makes you walk
over and flip on the light when you're home alone watching,"
he says.
"I
hope letters are written and people get upset because it
means we've done our job. We've given people nightmares
when they go to bed."
