Inside
the Legend: Bedtime Stories
If
anyone had told me I'd be playing bodyguard to 'Little
Red Riding Hood' before today I'd have laughed my butt
off. I mean, c'mon, me, Dean Winchester actually taking
Fairy Tales seriously? Heck, those are in Sammy's girlie
department not mine. Still, it happened and I gotta admit
it was more than real. So, how can some kid's bedtime
story come to life in such a freaky gorefest as it did
in Maple Springs? Let's get inside the mind of my geeky
brother and find out...
The
Brothers Grimm
Jacob
and Wilhelm Grimm were two brothers born in the 1800's
in Hanau - a small town in Germany. After their father
died and later their Grandfather, they were left in the
sole care of their mother in a cramped town house. Many
people believe this is why so many of their folk tales
revolved around a mother or stepmother figure.
As
they reached their twenties both brothers began studying
linguistics - a subject which would later lead to their
fascination with collecting and publishing European folk
tales.
In
1837 they both became involved in German politics by protesting
against the abolition of the liberal constitution of the
state of Hanover by King Ernest Augustus I. Due to the
nature of their protests, both Jacob and Wilhem were fired
from their posts as proffessors and Jacob was deported.
Eventually,
however, both brothers were allowed to settle back in
Berlin, where they are now buried.
In 2005 Terry Gilliam directed the movie
'The Brothers Grimm,' but it was far from factual
based, and way more the kind of thing I'd expect to catch
Dean secretly watching along with all those old WB cartoons
he's so damn fond of...

The
Truth Behind The Fairy Tales
Many
people think that Grimm's Fairy Tales have always been
the sweet, bedtime tales we read today - but they'd be
very wrong. The original stories collated by the brothers
were far from childrens reading material and were often
cruel and violent. Dean might make fun of my knowledge,
but in cases like we dealt with in Maple Springs, sometimes
the little 'girlie' things are what save the day.
Jacob
and Wilhelm began collecting folk tales in the early 1900's
by inviting local peasants as well as middle-class aristocracy
to their home to recount stories that had been passed
down through the generations. Publications began in 1810
and continued for many years - although many revisions
had to be made due to complaints about the subject matter
not being suitable for children. Eventually, the stories
were watered down to the version we know today.
Grimm's
Fairy Tales
Household
Tales
Some
of Grimm's most famous tales are:
Cinderella
Little
Red Riding Hood
Hansel
and Gretel
The
Three Pigs
Sleeping
Beauty
Snow
White
All
of which Dean and I witnessed first hand - even though
it was actually a young girl's spirit causing the stories
to play out. And no, Dean, the porn version of Snow
White so does not count...
You
can find a list of all the tales here.
So,
now that we know all about the actual stories, just how
did a spirit make them play out in the real world? As
Dean so aptly put it...

Lillian
Bailey O.B.E.
Lillian
Bailey was a deep-trance medium who had a gift that allowed
her spirit-self to leave her body and let another 'spirit'
inhabit it. Basically, Lillian let her body be used as
a vessel for those that had passed over to speak and interact
with others, including loved ones.
Lillian's
clients included many famous people from her time, including
Merle Oberon, Mae West and the late British Queen Mother!
Lillian
had two main spirit guides. William Hedley Wootton (A
Grenadier Guards Captain killed in France in the First
World War) and a Cingalese girl who liked to be called
'Poppet.'
Lillian
was also the author of two books, 'Teachings Through
The Mediumship of Lillian Bailey' and 'Death
is Her Life.'
