the Legend: Long Distance Call
THOMAS
EDISON’S SPIRIT PHONE
Thomas
Edison believed in the possible communication with the
dead. To bring about such a communication in 1920, he
developed a spirit phone. “If our personality survives,
then it is strictly logical or scientific to assume that
it retains memory, intellect, other faculties, and knowledge
that we acquire on this Earth. Therefore, if we can evolve
an instrument so delicate as to be affected by our personality
as it survives in the next life, such an instrument, when
made available, ought to record something.” Unfortunately,
Edison died before he could complete his final invention
and contact was never made. Edison’s final dying
words were, “it is very beautiful over there.”

CROCATA
A
Crocata is some kind of scavenger that whispers, “Come
to me,” to lure you into the dark and swallow your
soul. These things also live in filth, such as fly-infested
flea traps.
“Some
calls I make, some calls I take. But, you have to admit
I had you fooled you fooled for a while with all that
Edison phone crap. Found Dean’s number, then your
number, then your father’s numbers. And e-mails.
Voice mails. Everything. You see people think that that
stuff just gets erased, but it doesn’t. You’d
be surprised about how much of yourself is just floating
out there waiting to be plucked. Technology makes life
so much easier. Used to be, I’d hide in the woods
for days, weeks, whispering to people trying to draw them
out into the night but they had community. They all looked
out after each other. I’d be lucky to eat maybe
one, two souls a year. But, now when I’m hungry
all I have to do is make a phone call. You’re all
so connected. But, you’ve never been so alone."
