Wendigo
Wendigo:
Fierce Creatures
Following the pilot episode,
any new show needs to keep its momentum going to maintain
its viewing figures. Audiences can be pretty fierce creatures,
just like the 'Wendigo' of the title of this episode,
and if they don't get what they want they soon switch
channels.
With the premise of a once
human, cannibal type creature, 'Wendigo' had much to offer
in the scares department, if handled correctly. But, could
the production team pull it off without the audience actually
seeing much of the gore?
For the most part, I think
they did. Dark, broody forest shots mixed with fast paced
action/chase scenes down the mine, helped keep us wondering
how the Winchester brothers were going to get out of each
new sticky situation. I can't help but feel we could have
seen a little more of the actual 'Wendigo,' and known
more of its origins, but the makeup department certainly
made what we did see pretty grotesque.
In
fact, the 'Wendigo' reminded me perhaps a little too much
of the cave creatures in the horror flick, 'The Descent,'
but that's just my opinion.
Dean and Sam were pretty
entertaining once again, and I can't help but feel Jensen
Ackles has taken to his cutely rougish character, no holds
barred. He delivered each sardonic line with perfect timing
and his almost impish expressions at the girl of the tale
can't help but bring a smile to my face, just as they
were intended. "Sweetheart, I don't do shorts,"
for example, was just spot on.
The 'dream' scene with Sam in the car also let us see
that his girlfriend's death, and the thing that killed
her still haunt him. The question on every viewers mind
right now is why does the entity seem to be drawn to Sam,
and when will we find out? I smell a season cliffhanger
brewing for this particular conundrum!
All in all, 'Wendigo' was
what the producers originally promised- a one story episode
with no subplot or arcs, that still kept us entertained.
Was it the best second episode of a new show I've ever
seen? No, but it certainly wasn't the worst either.
If
'Supernatural' can keep up this kind of pace,
I'll be tuning in each week without fail.
Oh, and on a final note,
one pet gripe directed at the WB. Why the heck are we
only getting 13 episodes this season!!!!!!!
